The women who had accompanied usayn, including at least one of his wives, his sister Zaynab, and his surviving children, were taken first to Kfah and then across the desert to Yazd in Damascus. When Yazd learned of the rebellious attitude of the Shiah in Kfah, he sent Ubayd Allh, governor of Basra, to restore order. In the city of Kfah (in modern-day Iraq), those who maintained that the leadership of the Muslim community (ummah) rightly belonged to Muhammads cousin and son-in-law Al ibn Ab lib and his descendants invited usayn to take refuge with them, promising to have him proclaimed caliph there. Yazd I succeeded his father, Muwiyah I, to the caliphate in the spring of 680.
The battle helped secure the position of the Umayyad dynasty, but among Shii Muslims (followers of usayn) the 10th of Muarram (or shr) became an annual holy day of public mourning.
